Here is a breakdown of a typical year in Mr. Curtis’ ridiculously fun design class. This may change depending on how quickly (or slowly) we get through the projects.

Assignments 1000 Points
Exams (4 at 100 pts each) 400
Essays (2 at 100 pts each) 200
Presentation 150
Homework 100
Quizzes @ In-class Assignments 150
Projects (5 at 200 pts each) 1000 Points
Total 2000 Points

Your grade = (Points Earned divided by Points Possible ) x 100

Assignments run the gamut of traditional work like quizzes, in-class exercises, homework, etc. The main projects cover things like posters, brochures, logos, and other “real world” design projects. Those will be graded using a rubric that you’ll be given before each assignment (more on that below).

Extra Points

"1-up" - Super Mario World, 1990

“1-up” – Super Mario World, 1990

There will be several opportunities throughout the year to earn extra points.

  • Bring examples of design – One of the best ways to be a better designer is to look at design. Simple enough, right? Bring in some examples, both good and bad, and tell us why they’re good or bad. This is the best (and easiest) way to make extra points.
  • Extra research, projects, and presentations – I’ll offer an extra assignment from time to time for those who want extra points.
  • Make your own extra points – I’m open to ideas, so if you need extra points and you have an idea of how you can make some then let me know. I’ll either approve, deny, or modify your idea and you can earn extra points that way.
